DeVan Family History and Genealogy

Weller Sisters

Enos K. Weller and Clarissa (Crary) Weller of Clarendon, VT had five daughters. Four of them moved from Clarendon, VT to Ashtabula County, OH.

Julia Marie Weller married Cyrus N. Chapman. Cyrus's father sold him part of his farm in Morgan Twp. and all the Chapman's farmed there together. Julia was an accomplished needle woman. Beautiful specimens of her handy work in birds, flowers, and other designs are cherished by her posterity. Julia's mother Clarissa Weller lived with Julia and Cyrus during the 1840's and '50's.

Cyrus and Julia had three children: Charles, Demetrius, and Clarissa Adaline. Charles married Eunice Johnson, the daughter of Erastus and Sabra (Stanton) Johnson. Erastus was the local blacksmith in Trumbull, Ohio, near Morgan Twp. Demetrius (Deet) served in the Michigan 10th Calvary during the Civil War. He was seriously wounded in a battle near Lexington KY and badly crippled. There is no information about Clarissa Adaline.

Ruth Caroline Weller became the second wife of Erastus Nathanial DeVan in 1835. She was a woman of great energy and courage, well educated and a good geologist, possessing a fine cabinet of geological specimens. She was also quite an artist, and left some nice things in that line.

Sophia Weller became the wife of Orlando St. John at the age of fourteen and was the mother of the great geologist Orestus H. St. John.
